Vanderbilt got out to a hot offensive start and by the time Oklahoma found its footing, the 10th-ranked Sooners had fallen to the No. 5 Commodores 102-86 on Monday at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville. Oklahoma (17-6, 5-5 SEC) has dropped back-to-back games after going ice cold from beyond the arc, going just 2 for 24 (8.3%) on 3-pointers.
Why it matters
This loss drops Oklahoma to 5-5 in SEC play, putting them in a tough spot as they look to make the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, continues to prove itself as one of the top teams in the country with this impressive win over a ranked opponent.
The details
Vanderbilt was hot offensively from the jump, starting a blistering 17 of 23 from the field and hitting nine consecutive shots. The Commodores took control with a 16-6 first-quarter run to go up 21-11, and the Sooners were never closer than eight points after that. Oklahoma's struggles from deep were historic, with their 8.3% 3-point shooting being their worst since going 1 of 26 (3.8%) in a loss to North Carolina in December 2023.
- Vanderbilt got out to a hot offensive start in the first quarter.
- Oklahoma was ice cold from beyond the arc throughout the game.
The players
Mikayla Blakes
Vanderbilt sophomore sensation who came into the game as the second-leading scorer in the country, averaging 25.6 points per game. She finished with 34 points, going 13 of 23 from the field and 10 of 13 from inside the arc.
Aubrey Galvan
Vanderbilt player who scored a career-high 30 points in the game.
Raegan Beers
Oklahoma's center who finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but also had 6 turnovers and fouled out with 4:26 remaining.
Aaliyah Chavez
Oklahoma freshman who was held without a 3-pointer for the first time this season, going 0 of 11 from beyond the arc.
What’s next
The schedule lightens up considerably for Oklahoma from here, with only two of their six remaining regular season games against ranked opponents and none against teams in the top 20.
The takeaway
This loss highlights Oklahoma's struggles against top competition, as they have now played five top-10 opponents in their last seven games. However, the Sooners have a chance to bounce back with a softer schedule ahead, though they will need to improve their 3-point shooting to compete with the best teams in the country.
