The Auburn Tigers' four-game winning streak came to an end with a 77-69 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. The Tigers failed to stick to their brand of physical, inside-out basketball, instead settling for a high volume of three-point attempts that did not fall. Tennessee dominated the glass, out-rebounding Auburn by 16 and grabbing 17 offensive boards. The Tigers now look to regroup and get back to their identity ahead of a key matchup with in-state rival Alabama.
Why it matters
Auburn has proven it can compete with elite big men and physical teams when it plays to its strengths of attacking the paint, crashing the boards, and playing tough defense. The loss to Tennessee highlighted the Tigers' need to reclaim that identity if they want to remain a contender in the SEC.
The details
The Tigers struggled mightily on the offensive end, shooting just 38.1% from the field and 22.6% from three-point range. They attempted 31 three-pointers, nearly half of their total shots, despite that not being a strength of theirs. In contrast, the Volunteers dominated the glass, finishing with a +16 rebounding advantage and 17 offensive boards. Auburn's leading rebounder, Filip Jovic, had just 7 total rebounds, 5 of them on the offensive end.
- The Tigers' last win over Tennessee on the road came in 2020.
- Auburn has a week off before facing Alabama next weekend.
The players
Filip Jovic
Auburn's most active contributor on the glass, notching 5 offensive rebounds.
Keyshawn Hall
Ranked first nationally in free throws made per game entering Saturday's contest, but went just 4-of-5 from the charity stripe against Tennessee.
What’s next
Auburn has a week off before facing in-state rival Alabama next weekend. The Tigers now have a blueprint for how to beat the Crimson Tide - attack the glass, exhibit physicality in the paint, play with relentless effort on defense, and get downhill on the offensive end.
The takeaway
This loss highlighted the need for Auburn to get back to playing its brand of physical, inside-out basketball. When the Tigers stray from that identity, they struggle to be successful. Reclaiming that style of play will be crucial as they look to bounce back and remain a contender in the SEC.
