East Tennessee State University's Sherrod Library is hosting a podcasting workshop on February 25th to celebrate author John Green and his popular podcast 'The Anthropocene Reviewed', which shares its name with Green's latest book that is part of the university's common read program. The workshop will teach students how to use Audacity to record and edit audio for their own podcasts.
Why it matters
The workshop reflects the storytelling traditions of Appalachia while embracing modern media platforms. It aims to engage the campus community around the common read program and introduce students to the audio production resources available at the university's Innovation Commons.
The details
The free 2-hour workshop will cover the basics of setting up a recording in Audacity, editing for pacing and adding effects like compression and normalization, as well as adding bumper music or sound effects. Students will learn the fundamentals to get started producing their own podcasts. The workshop is open to all majors and skill levels.
- The workshop will take place on February 25, 2026 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM.
The players
Sherrod Library
The library at East Tennessee State University that is hosting the podcasting workshop.
John Green
The author whose book 'The Anthropocene Reviewed' is the focus of ETSU's common read program and the inspiration for the podcasting workshop.
Aaron Castle
An assistant professor at Sherrod Library who said the workshop aims to connect students with media resources on campus.
Callum Harris
A media and communication student who has helped lead previous workshops and will be teaching the basics of recording and editing audio.
What they’re saying
“We knew that the author was coming to campus, and he was also the common read for ETSU, and we thought that'd be a good time for Innovation Commons to reach out to the ETSU community and get them aware of some of the stuff we have here.”
— Aaron Castle, Assistant Professor, Sherrod Library (easttennessean.com)
“Storytelling is a big thing here in Appalachia. But it's very much the way media is consumed now. Most people are going to YouTube or a quick online search, and that's where they get their storytelling.”
— Aaron Castle, Assistant Professor, Sherrod Library (easttennessean.com)
“If you don't have a story or something to keep your listeners hooked, then they won't listen. That's really what we want to try to teach in this workshop — how to at least start it off.”
— Callum Harris, Radio, Television and Film Major (easttennessean.com)
What’s next
The workshop is limited to a small number of participants and typically fills up quickly. Students can register through the Sherrod Library's events calendar on the library website.
The takeaway
This workshop demonstrates how universities can leverage modern media platforms like podcasting to engage students around campus reading programs and introduce them to valuable production skills and campus resources.
