The Heritage Alliance and Bridge Builders of Kingsport will present "Nancy," a historical play examining the life and fate of an enslaved woman documented in Washington County records. The play explores the untold story of an enslaved woman owned by abolitionist Elihu Embree, founder of The Emancipator, the nation's first newspaper devoted solely to ending slavery. The role of "Nancy" will be performed by Taleah D. Rogers, a Johnson City native and veteran educator.
Why it matters

The details
"Nancy" is an original, award-winning historical play by Anne G'Fellers-Mason that draws heavily from documents housed in the Washington County Archives. The play is set between January 1820, when Embree wrote his will, and January 1821, when it was read before the Washington County Court. Embree attempted to free Nancy and her five children in his will, but it remains uncertain whether those wishes were honored.
- The play will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026, at Central Baptist Church in Kingsport.
- A panel discussion will follow the performance.
