Humboldt associate head coach Marcus Butler knew the questions were coming after the Vikings' 52-39 loss to Jackson County in the TSSAA boys basketball Class 1A state championship game on March 21. The loss marked the end of Ronald Abernathy's storied coaching career, which began in the early 1970s and included stints at Shawnee High School in Kentucky, LSU under legendary coach Dale Brown, and Tennessee State University.

Why it matters

Abernathy's retirement marks the end of an era for the Humboldt basketball program, which he led to great success over the past 12 seasons, including five state tournament appearances and two championship game berths.
