Governors fall 17-6 in first of four straight home games

The Austin Peay State University (APSU) lacrosse team lost to Winthrop 17-6 on Saturday at Morgan Brothers Field in Clarksville, Tennessee. Winthrop opened the game on a 5-0 run before APSU got on the board. The Eagles led 12-3 at halftime and extended their lead to 16-3 in the third quarter. APSU's Sophia Schwab scored three goals in the loss.

This was the first of four straight home games for the APSU lacrosse team as they look to build momentum in their inaugural season. The loss to Winthrop, who entered the game 4-3, shows the Governors still have work to do to compete with tougher opponents at home.

After Winthrop opened the game on a 5-0 run, APSU's Tori Ross scored on a free position shot to get the Governors on the board. Winthrop then pushed their lead to 7-1 before APSU's Katie Ferrara scored on an assist from Mak Patten to make it 7-2. Sophia Schwab then scored two more goals for APSU, but Winthrop closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 12-3 at the break. Winthrop extended their advantage to 16-3 in the third quarter before Schwab and Ferrara scored the final goals of the game for the 17-6 final.
