Gingerbee's farewell show in Chicago celebrates the creative potential of the bedroom skramz scene.Greenville TodayGingerbee, an experimental skramz project that emerged from the online 'bedroom skramz' scene, is saying goodbye with a final show in Chicago featuring a 16-piece band. The group, which formed through connections made on the internet, has expanded its lo-fi, homemade sound into a sprawling, symphonic farewell on its latest EP 'Apiary.' For their last performance, Gingerbee has assembled an impressive lineup of collaborators from their global network to play every song they've ever released.
Why it matters
Gingerbee represents the creative potential of the 'bedroom skramz' subgenre, which has blossomed into an international underground scene thanks to the connective power of the internet. Their ambitious farewell show highlights how this DIY music community has transcended its humble origins to produce complex, collaborative works that defy the limitations of a single bedroom.
The details
Gingerbee started as a solo project by Toronto multi-instrumentalist Melody Sohani, who posted a demo to the Bedroom Skramz / DIY Jamz (BSDJ) Discord server. That track caught the attention of Brazilian musician Gustavo Nome, who added guitar parts. Sohani and Nome then formed the core of Gingerbee, later recruiting vocalist Dani Giguere from South Carolina. Over time, Gingerbee expanded its lineup, drawing in collaborators from around the world through online connections, including members of groups like Hey, ILY; Drug Bug; and Lobsterfight. For their final show at Chicago's Thalia Hall, Gingerbee has assembled a 16-piece collective to perform their entire discography.
