Fluctuating gas prices in the Northeast reflect the broader economic forces shaping the region's energy landscape.Providence TodayThe average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island climbed 17 cents to $3.99 per gallon, AAA Northeast said Monday. That price is 12 cents lower than the national average. It is also 85 cents higher than it was a year ago and $1 more than it was in Rhode Island a year ago. In Massachusetts, the average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded also is up 13 cents at $3.93 per gallon.
Why it matters
Pump prices in the Northeast keep rising with oil prices now above $100 per barrel due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. High driver demand combined with fuel distributors pushing the last of winter-blend gasoline out of the system has led to a steady drawdown of domestic inventories, according to AAA.

What they’re saying
“Rising gas prices have not led to a dip in demand. As the busiest spring and summer driving seasons get underway, time will tell if higher prices have any impact on drivers' appetite for hitting the road.”
— Jillian Young, Director of Public Relations, AAA Northeast
The takeaway
While gas prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts are rising, they remain well below the national average, though significantly higher than a year ago. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East and high driver demand have contributed to the price increases, but it remains to be seen if higher prices will impact drivers' travel plans in the coming spring and summer seasons.
