The Blizzard of '26 in Rhode Island surpassed the iconic Blizzard of '78, setting new records for snowfall. To commemorate the epic storm, the Providence gift shop Frog & Toad created a special t-shirt design inspired by the work of artist R. Crumb, featuring a person shoveling out from a massive snowbank. The shop's two in-house artists submitted designs, with the owner selecting the Crumb-inspired artwork that they screen printed in-house on a range of sizes.
Why it matters
The Blizzard of '26 was a historic weather event that will be remembered for generations in Rhode Island. By creating commemorative merchandise, Frog & Toad is helping to preserve the memory of this extreme snowstorm and the community's resilience in digging out. The t-shirt design also pays homage to the iconic 1970s artwork of R. Crumb, connecting the current storm to Rhode Island's cultural history.
The details
Frog & Toad, a Providence gift shop that has been in business for over 25 years, decided to create a special t-shirt to mark the Blizzard of '26. The shop's two staff artists, Michael Ezzell and Maret Bondorew, each submitted design proposals, but the owner, Asher Schofield, selected Maret's design which was inspired by the work of artist R. Crumb. The t-shirt features a person shoveling out from a massive snowbank, a nod to the over 37 inches of snow that fell during the storm. Frog & Toad screen printed the shirts in-house and currently have sizes ranging from extra small to 3XL available for purchase.
