A couple from Bristol, Rhode Island, Carlolyn Carcasi, 54, and James Carcasi, 53, were killed in an early Friday morning crash at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 136 in Swansea, Massachusetts. The crash occurred when an Infinity G37 driven by Demitri Sousa, 28, of Seekonk, Massachusetts, slammed into the side of the couple's Subaru Ascent. Sousa had earlier gunned down a man through the door of his Cranston, Rhode Island home and was fleeing the scene when the fatal crash occurred.
Why it matters
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of high-speed chases and the devastating consequences that can occur when an accused murderer flees the scene of a crime. It also raises questions about public safety and the need for improved coordination between law enforcement agencies across state lines.
The details
According to authorities, the Infinity G37 driven by Sousa slammed into the side of the Subaru Ascent driven by the Carcasi couple around 12:15 a.m., causing "catastrophic damage" to both vehicles. The Subaru was fully engulfed in flames, and first responders and bystanders were unable to save the couple. Sousa survived the crash and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The Cranston police had secured a warrant charging Sousa with murder, using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license.
