A powerful nor'easter developing off the Carolina coast this weekend will primarily impact Cape Cod and the Islands, bringing 2-5 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 55 mph. However, the rest of Massachusetts will largely be spared the storm's full fury, with only light snow accumulations of 1-3 inches expected in some areas.
Why it matters
While the storm will be intense, its track will keep the worst conditions offshore, limiting the impact on most of Massachusetts. This spares the region from potential power outages, coastal flooding, and heavy snow accumulations that can often accompany major winter storms.
The details
The storm system is expected to undergo rapid intensification, or "bombogenesis," as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard. However, the most intense part of the storm will remain out to sea, with only the northwest fringe affecting New England. Cape Cod and the Islands will see the highest snowfall totals, with 2-5 inches expected, along with strong winds gusting up to 55 mph. Other parts of Southeastern Massachusetts, including the South Shore and South Coast, could see 1-3 inches of snow. Areas west of I-495 are expected to see only a light coating to an inch of snow, making this a minimal impact event for much of the state.
- The snow will start falling between 2-5 a.m. on Sunday across Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts.
- Snow will continue throughout the day on Sunday, with clearing taking place overnight into Monday.
- A coastal flood watch is in effect for Sunday and Monday due to the combination of strong winds, storm surge, and high tides.

What they’re saying
“Cape Cod and the Islands will be impacted the most by this weather system, but even there, the impact will be nothing remarkable.”
— Dave Epstein, Meteorologist
What’s next
The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the storm's track and issue updates on potential impacts as the system approaches the region.
The takeaway
While this nor'easter will bring some snow and wind to parts of Massachusetts, the storm's track will largely spare the region from the worst conditions. This serves as a reminder that even powerful winter storms can sometimes have a limited impact if they follow a favorable path.
