Fitzgerald was the daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Ruddock) Plant, and the beloved wife of the late Donald J. Fitzgerald. She was a devoted communicant of St. Paul Church in Edgewood for over 60 years and was an active member of the Legion of Mary. Fitzgerald also served the community as a Crossing Guard for the City of Cranston for more than 30 years, retiring in 2003.
