Graduate student Nick Delp became Shippensburg University wrestling's first national qualifier since the 2022-23 season after overcoming adversity to reach the 165-pound final at the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships. Delp was joined on the podium by three other Raider place-winners, but he will be the lone Shippensburg wrestler competing at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on March 13 and 14.
Why it matters
Shippensburg University's wrestling program has struggled in recent years to qualify wrestlers for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Delp's achievement marks an important milestone for the program as they look to rebuild and regain their competitiveness at the national level.
The details
Delp nearly saw his regional tournament run end moments after it started, as an injury seconds into his opening match resulted in a lengthy delay and forced him into concussion protocol. After being cleared to return, Delp stormed back to earn a 20-3 tech fall win. He then pinned Fairmont State's Brock Evans in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinal matchup against Pitt-Johnstown's Trent Hoover. Delp came back from an early 3-0 deficit to win a close 9-7 decision and clinch a spot at nationals, but ultimately opted to medically forfeit the 165-pound final.
- Delp's opening match at the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships took place on Saturday, March 4, 2026.
- The NCAA Division II National Championships will take place on March 13 and 14, 2026 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
