The Crestwood High School girls basketball team opened the PIAA Class 5A state tournament with a 51-38 win over Cocalico on Saturday. The Comets led 16-4 after the first quarter but had to battle to the end as Cocalico made a late push, cutting the lead to 6 points in the fourth quarter before Crestwood pulled away again.
Why it matters
This win keeps Crestwood's season alive as they look to make a deep run in the state tournament. The Comets are the District 2 champions and will now face District 1 fourth seed Marple Newtown in the second round on Wednesday.

The Comets were able to regain control in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

What they’re saying
“I think we were a little too fast on offense. Rushing things, rushing shots. Our focus wasn't there when we go that fast. When you're rushing down the court like that and just throwing up shots and not doing little things, unfortunately the game is going to be a little closer than you want it to be.”
— Mary Mushock-Namey, Crestwood Head Coach (Yahoo Sports)
“It was self-inflicted. We were going a little bit too fast and weren't talking care of the ball, weren't talking on defense, but we fixed that.”
— Jackie Gallagher (Yahoo Sports)
“You always expect teams playing in the state tournament to come back hard. You can't ever give up no matter how big your lead is. So that was our big thing. Keep our foot on the gas.”
— Jackie Gallagher (Yahoo Sports)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This case highlights growing concerns in the community about repeat offenders released on bail, raising questions about bail reform, public safety on SF streets, and if any special laws to govern autonomous vehicles in residential and commercial areas.
