With no Pennsylvania teams involved, restaurants throughout the Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) region say that won't put a dent in Sunday's sales of the Super Bowl party favorite - chicken wings. Establishments like Kelly's Pub & Eatery and the R Bar are preparing to cook thousands of wings in a variety of flavors to meet the high demand from customers looking to celebrate the big game.
Why it matters
Chicken wings have become a quintessential Super Bowl food, with Americans expected to consume over 1.48 billion of them during the game. Even without a local team playing, NEPA restaurants are counting on the tradition of gathering with friends and family to watch the Super Bowl to drive strong wing sales.
The details
Kelly's Pub & Eatery in Scranton plans to cook 20,000-25,000 wings on Super Bowl Sunday, offering deals like 50 wings for $58 and 100 for $98. The R Bar in Nanticoke went through 18 cases (about 5,000 wings) last year and expects similar demand, with specials of 30 wings for $30 and 50 for $50. Nina's Wing Bites & Pizza in Dunmore and South Abington Twp. sold over 600 orders of boneless wings last year, their busiest day. Restaurants are preparing by making sauces in advance and having extra staff on hand to handle the influx of orders.
