The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, nicknamed "The Password", to their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis to start the 2026 MLB season. Garcia, a former Boston Red Sox prospect acquired in an offseason trade, had an impressive .405 batting average and 1.058 OPS in 37 spring training at-bats, but the Pirates have decided to have him begin the year in the minors.
Why it matters
Garcia is considered a top prospect in the Pirates' system and his strong spring performance indicated he may be ready for a full-time role in the majors. However, the Pirates likely want to see him get consistent playing time in Triple-A to further develop before bringing him up to the big league club.
The details
The 23-year-old Garcia made his MLB debut last season, posting a .619 OPS in five games with the Red Sox. In the minors in 2025, he had an .810 OPS and .267 batting average in 114 games. Despite his impressive spring, the Pirates have decided to option Garcia to Triple-A Indianapolis to start the 2026 season, along with infielder/outfielder Tyler Callihan.
