When designer Nathan Turner was tasked with reimagining a longtime client's Turks and Caicos residence, he kept one key insight in mind: the homeowners entertain frequently. After a major renovation and addition that more than tripled the original square footage, the property now boasts nine bedrooms, multiple living and dining areas, and an array of outdoor amenities - all designed to create the feel of a boutique hotel for the owners and their guests.
Why it matters
This project showcases how thoughtful design can transform a home into a true entertaining oasis, balancing private retreats and communal gathering spaces to create the perfect setting for hosting extended family and friends. The designer's approach of treating the home like a boutique hotel offers valuable insights for anyone looking to maximize the livability and functionality of their own residence.
The details
The renovation, overseen by local firm Coast Architects, included a new wing that added significantly more square footage. Each of the nine bedrooms now functions as a self-contained suite with its own bathroom, seating area, minibar, and outdoor lounge. The primary suite on the top floor is a true sanctuary, spanning 1,129 square feet with a spacious seating area, kitchenette, private laundry, and large sundeck. Outside, the property features twin pools, a hot tub, a shaded conversation pit, a bocce court, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and bar. Designer Nathan Turner used a mix of natural materials and warm neutrals to create a cohesive, modern aesthetic that complements the Caribbean setting without resorting to clichés.
- The renovation and expansion were completed in 2026.
The players
Nathan Turner
A Los Angeles-based designer who led the project, approaching it with a 'boutique hotel' mindset to balance private retreats and communal gathering spaces.
Coast Architects
The local firm that oversaw the gut renovation and addition to the existing tropical modern structure.
Abel Macias
A Los Angeles-based artist who created a vibrant mural for the stairwell, depicting a fantastical scene of seaweed, birds, fish, and other sea life.
Jen McGowan
A Philadelphia landscape designer who created the lush patios and gardens that guide visitors from the house to the shore.
Chris Davies
The lead architect from Coast Architects, who aimed to 'bring the outside to the house and the house to the outside' through the design.
What they’re saying
“'These are people who entertain a lot. The house would be full.' Often.”
— Nathan Turner, Designer
“'What we tried to do was to bring the outside to the house and the house to the outside.'”
— Chris Davies, Lead Architect, Coast Architects
“'Because the house is literally indoor-outdoor, and the walls just open up to the outside, I said, 'You know what? Blue is going to be a neutral for us. We're going to use the colors we see right outside.''”
— Nathan Turner, Designer
What’s next
The homeowners plan to host their first major event at the newly renovated property this summer, welcoming their extended family and a rotating group of friends for a multi-week vacation.
The takeaway
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a home into a true entertaining oasis, blending private retreats and communal gathering spaces to create the perfect setting for hosting large groups. The designer's 'boutique hotel' approach offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to maximize the functionality and livability of their own residence.
