The Houston Texans have signed former Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship to a three-year, $25 million contract. Blankenship, an undrafted free agent who won a Super Bowl with the Eagles, is expected to start alongside Pro Bowler Calen Bullock and provide veteran leadership and stability to the Texans' already elite defense.
Why it matters
The Texans' secondary was one of the league's best in 2025, and adding an experienced, productive safety like Blankenship should only strengthen that unit as the team aims to make a Super Bowl run. Blankenship's winning pedigree and ability to 'add a certain level of calm' to the secondary were key factors in the signing.
The details
Blankenship, 27, started 16 games for the Eagles last season, recording 83 total tackles, 4 passes defended, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble. He's had over 75 tackles in each of the last three seasons and has started over 50 games between the regular season and playoffs during that stretch. The Texans see Blankenship as a perfect complement to Pro Bowler Calen Bullock in the back end of their defense.

“He's got a pretty cool story. He was a player that's a good example [of a] player that wasn't drafted and had a good career to this point.”
— Nick Caserio, General Manager, Houston Texans
“Really, we're not going to ask these players to do anything more than what they've already done to this point. But Reed's got a pretty cool story; his background, where he started to where he is now, speaks a lot about who he is, as a person and a player.”
— Nick Caserio, General Manager, Houston Texans
