A Philadelphia woman is demanding answers after her fiancé, Omar Padilla Vélez, was gunned down in what she says was a random ambush shooting while the couple was visiting Puerto Rico. Kelly Crispin said she and Padilla Vélez were driving back to his family's home in San Juan when their car was surrounded by more than a dozen masked men armed with AR-style rifles. As Padilla Vélez tried to drive around them, the gunmen opened fire, killing him and wounding Crispin. No arrests have been made, and Crispin is calling for justice, saying the case has received little media coverage.
Why it matters
The deadly ambush has raised concerns about safety for tourists in Puerto Rico, a popular destination that has struggled with high crime rates in certain areas. The case also highlights the ongoing challenges of gun violence and the need for thorough investigations to bring perpetrators to justice, especially in cases involving foreign visitors.
The details
According to Crispin, she and Padilla Vélez were driving back from a night of dancing in San Juan when they made a wrong turn off the Calle Cerra nightlife strip around 1:45 a.m. on January 3. Their car was then surrounded by more than a dozen masked gunmen at the intersection of Calle Blanca and Calle La Nueva Palma. As Padilla Vélez tried to drive around them, the attackers opened fire, striking him in the head and Crispin in the hand, shoulder, and back of the head. After the shooting stopped, one of the assailants approached the vehicle and took Crispin's phone before they were directed out of the neighborhood. Padilla Vélez, a DuPont chemist, later suffered a catastrophic stroke caused by a bullet fragment and died.
