Ziyker Washington, 20, and Benjamin Lee, 18, both of Norristown, were arrested for a January 4th shooting that seriously injured 21-year-old Jayla Dinolfi, leaving her paralyzed, and wounded another man, 22-year-old Milan Dean-Brewer. Three others - Dayvir Hardcastle, 24, of Norristown, and Derek Moore, 27, and Ramel Dwayne Waddell Jr., 24, both of Philadelphia - were also charged in a related gun trafficking investigation tied to the firearm used in the shooting.

Why it matters

The shooting highlights ongoing gun violence issues in the Norristown area, as well as the broader problem of illegal firearms trafficking that can enable such violence. The charges against the five individuals show law enforcement's efforts to crack down on both the perpetrators of shootings and the supply chain of illegal guns.

The details

Police responded on January 4th to reports of a woman shot in the back on Powell Street. Investigators later determined the shooting actually occurred minutes earlier at a Shell gas station, where surveillance footage showed Washington and Lee getting out of a silver Honda Accord, with Washington then opening fire on a black Cadillac SUV driven by Dean-Brewer. Ballistics testing linked the 10mm handgun used in the shooting to one that had been illegally purchased weeks earlier by Derek Moore.
