A ShotSpotter alert for gunfire in Norristown, PA led detectives to uncover a turf war between two alleged sex traffickers, Efran Flores-Rodriguez and Fernando Meza-Ramirez. Flores-Rodriguez is accused of shooting Meza-Ramirez in the thigh during the dispute, which police say was part of an ongoing conflict over trafficking operations in the area. Both men were arrested and charged with trafficking and related offenses.
Why it matters
The case highlights the violent nature of sex trafficking operations and the lengths criminals will go to maintain control over lucrative prostitution rings. It also raises concerns about the prevalence of these illicit activities in the Norristown community and the need for greater law enforcement and social services to combat human trafficking.
The details
According to the affidavit, on February 13th police responded to a ShotSpotter alert for gunfire on Sandy Street in Norristown. They found Meza-Ramirez, 42, of New York, suffering from a gunshot wound to the thigh inside a Toyota RAV4 that had multiple bullet strikes. Detectives later determined the shooting was part of a turf war between Meza-Ramirez and Flores-Rodriguez, 24, of Norristown. Investigators allege Flores-Rodriguez followed Meza-Ramirez's vehicle and shot him from the back seat of a stolen Acura TLX. A search of Flores-Rodriguez's home uncovered the stolen vehicle as well as two loaded firearms. Police also found a woman there who said she was a victim of Flores-Rodriguez's trafficking operation, having been brought from New York and forced into prostitution.
