The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has begun a major closure and remediation project on U.S. Route 202 in King of Prussia. The road will be shut down 24/7 from Saulin Boulevard to Henderson Road through late fall as crews work to stabilize the ground beneath the pavement using a "limited mobility grouting program" and make drainage and pavement improvements.
Why it matters
U.S. 202 is a critical transportation artery in the Philadelphia suburbs, and the extended closure will cause significant disruptions and detours for commuters, businesses, and residents in the area. The sinkhole issues have plagued this section of the highway for years, requiring repeated repairs, so this long-term remediation project aims to provide a more permanent solution.
The details
PennDOT's $22.4 million project involves drilling a grid pattern of holes in the pavement and filling them with pressurized grout to stabilize the ground underneath. Crews will also be working on drainage improvements and full pavement reconstruction along the affected stretch. This is the second stage of the remediation work, as U.S. 202 north was previously shut down for 8 months in 2025 for the initial phase.
- The U.S. 202 closure began on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
- The road will remain shut down through late fall 2026.
The players
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)
The state transportation agency overseeing the U.S. 202 closure and remediation project.
Heidelberg Materials
The general contractor for the U.S. 202 project.
What’s next
PennDOT has stated that local access for homes and businesses will be maintained during the closure, but all other through traffic will be detoured to Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road.
The takeaway
This major infrastructure project on a critical suburban Philadelphia highway highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining aging transportation networks and addressing issues like sinkholes that can cause significant disruptions for commuters and businesses. The extended closure will test the resilience of the local community until the remediation work is completed.
