Erie County, in partnership with the Western NY Stormwater Coalition, is once again offering rain barrels and compost bins to encourage households to reduce their environmental footprint through water conservation and reducing fertilizer use.
Why it matters
Rain barrels help conserve water and reduce stormwater runoff, which can transport pollutants to local waterways. Home composting enriches soil, stimulates plant growth, and keeps waste out of landfills.
The details
Rain barrels reduce stormwater runoff and allow gardeners to use nutrient-rich rainwater instead of chlorinated tap water. Home composting restores nutrients to soil, stimulates plant growth, and diverts yard trimmings and food scraps from landfills.
