A colorful pop art celebration of the Independence Conservancy's efforts to responsibly dispose of unwanted tires and support a cleaner environment.Beaver TodayThe Independence Conservancy, a nonprofit environmental organization, will be hosting three waste tire collection events in Allegheny and Beaver Counties in Pennsylvania over the next month. Residents can bring in tires and wheels from cars, light trucks, and even farm tractors to be properly disposed of for a small fee.
Why it matters
Proper disposal of old tires is important to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile and Zika, as stagnant water in discarded tires can become breeding grounds. The Independence Conservancy has been running this tire collection program since 2004, properly disposing of over 66,000 tires and reinvesting the proceeds into local conservation efforts.
The details
The tire collection events will be held on April 25 in Findlay Township, May 2 in Rochester, and May 9 in Aliquippa. Residents and small businesses can bring in tires, both on and off the rim, with fees ranging from $5 to $35 depending on the tire size. Cash or check payments will be accepted on-site.
- The first tire collection event will be held on April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.
- The second tire collection event will be held on May 2 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.
- The third tire collection event will be held on May 9 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.
