The bathroom at St. Johns beer bar and community hub Lombard House in Portland, Oregon is not your typical restroom. Located outside and around the corner from the main building, the bathroom is now tiled with framed pictures of celebrities on toilets, each one inscribed by owner Brian Koch with an endorsement to Lombard House. The unique decor was born out of a desire to make the out-of-the-way bathroom a fun and disarming experience for customers.
Why it matters
Lombard House's quirky bathroom decor reflects the bar's commitment to creating a unique and memorable experience for its customers. In a city with many bars and restaurants, this type of creative and playful approach helps Lombard House stand out and build a loyal following.
The details
Owner Brian Koch started with some potty jokes on the bathroom walls, then added a signed photo from Ronald Reagan that he customized with an endorsement for the bar. From there, the theme evolved to include framed photos of various celebrities, like Elvis, Frank Zappa, and The Dude, all sitting on toilets with personalized messages written by Koch. The only exception is a photo of Naomi Campbell, whom Koch figured would dislike the bar's aesthetic.
