Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who represents a swing district in Washington state, has repeatedly claimed she struggled financially in college after her father cut her off for not attending church. However, documents show her father loaned her between $24,000 and $47,999 to help her buy her first property just two years after graduating from the prestigious Reed College. Perez also received substantial financial support from her family to purchase land and build a home in Skamania County.
Why it matters
Perez has made her 'working class' background central to her political identity and campaigns. The revelations about her family's financial support for her early adult life call into question the accuracy of her claims about her economic struggles and upbringing.
The details
Documents reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon show that despite Perez's claims of being cut off financially by her father in college, he actually loaned her a significant amount of money to purchase her first property just two years after graduating from Reed College. Perez and her husband also received substantial financial support from her father, father-in-law, and a family friend to purchase land and build a home in Skamania County. Perez did not disclose the favorable terms of these loans in her financial disclosures.
- In 2014, Perez and her husband purchased a five-acre plot in Skamania County for $174,000 and built a home on it in the following years.
- In 2016, Perez's financial disclosure report showed she owed her father, father-in-law, and a family friend up to $47,999 each for 'payment and interest with cash out' for the 'value of house'.
- By 2018, Perez's only remaining debt was to her father, and Flagstar Bank had replaced the original creditor with a loan of $120,000 or more.
The players
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez
Democratic Congresswoman representing Washington's Third Congressional District, who has made her 'working class' background central to her political identity and campaigns.
Jose Perez
Perez's father, whom she describes as a volunteer evangelical pastor in Houston, who loaned her between $24,000 and $47,999 to help her buy her first property just two years after she graduated from Reed College.
Dean Gluesenkamp
Perez's husband, who received financial support from Perez's family to purchase land and build a home in Skamania County.
Jane Edinger
A friend of Perez's who has donated over $12,000 to Perez's congressional campaigns and helped finance the purchase of the Skamania County property.
Stephanie Huntington
The mother of filmmaker Foster Huntington, who let Perez and her husband live in a converted bus on her land in rural Washington before selling them the property.
The takeaway
Perez's claims of being a 'working class Washingtonian' who struggled financially in college appear to be at odds with the financial support she received from her family to purchase property and build a home. This raises questions about the accuracy of her political narrative and whether she has been transparent about her upbringing and financial circumstances.
