Reggie Townsend, a 34-year-old Oregon man, has been charged with first-degree murder for the brutal killing of an unhoused man named Kolton Esparza. Townsend allegedly tortured and beat Esparza to death with a rock and his shoes, according to a letter he wrote to his girlfriend. Townsend's sister, Jamie Harrington, has also been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly driving Townsend and Esparza to the location where the killing took place.
Why it matters
This case highlights the ongoing issue of violence against unhoused individuals, who are often vulnerable targets. It also raises concerns about repeat offenders and the need for effective rehabilitation and reintegration programs to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
The details
According to the police affidavit, Esparza's body was found "nude and severely beaten" inside a vacant residence near the Eulolona Trailhead in Klamath County. His wrists were bound with rope, and he had "signs of torture" and "severe head trauma" that led to his death. Townsend allegedly confessed to his girlfriend in a letter, stating, "I beat Kolton with a rock and stomped him out with my shoes." Harrington told police that she drove Townsend and an unidentified male to the trailhead, where they exited the vehicle, and she later picked up two of the males walking on foot.
- Townsend was released from prison in November 2025 after a stint for manslaughter.
- On November 30, 2025, Townsend wrote on Facebook, "I'm fresh outta prison and I'm vibing with my family and I can honestly say I'm blessed. Feeling blessed."
