The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced that Interstate 84 between Exit 353 and Exit 356 will be reduced to one lane in both directions starting March 20. Westbound traffic will shift to the eastbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction, to allow crews to complete paving and other work on the westbound lanes. This is part of a major two-year roadway improvement project between Huntington and Ontario that will repave 16 miles of I-84 and make other upgrades to the highway.
Why it matters
The construction project is aimed at extending the life of the highway, reducing maintenance needs, and improving safety for all travelers along this busy stretch of I-84. However, the lane closures and shifts will likely cause delays and inconvenience for drivers in the region during the multi-year project.
The details
Westbound traffic will shift to the eastbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction. This temporary configuration will allow crews to complete paving and other work on the westbound lanes. The project also includes rebuilding the road connections near the Olds Ferry Interchange at Exit 356 and upgrading the weigh-in-motion system at the Farewell Bend Port of Entry.
- The lane closures and shifts will begin on March 20, 2026.
- The overall construction project is scheduled for completion in October 2027.
The players

The state agency responsible for managing and maintaining Oregon's transportation infrastructure, including Interstate 84.
What’s next
Drivers can expect reduced speeds and ongoing single-lane and shoulder closures on I-84 in both directions between Huntington and Ontario during the construction project. Various I-84 ramps will also close temporarily as work progresses.
The takeaway
This major construction project on I-84 between Huntington and Ontario will cause significant disruptions for drivers in the region over the next two years, but the end result will be a safer and more reliable highway that requires less maintenance in the long run.
