Stacy Leeds, the dean of the Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, has been named the next president of the University of Tulsa, effective July 1. Leeds will be the first woman to lead the Oklahoma university, where she graduated from the University of Tulsa College of Law in 1997.
Why it matters
Leeds' appointment as the first female president of the University of Tulsa is a significant milestone, as women have historically been underrepresented in top leadership roles in higher education. Her background as a Native American woman and former law school dean also brings a unique perspective to the university's leadership.
The details
At ASU Law, Leeds helped advance the school through 'momentum through innovation, strategic planning and a deep commitment to student success.' According to the Women Attorneys in Higher Education Leadership study, only 10.1% of college and university presidents have been women from 1970 to 2019, despite women making up 30% of college presidents overall. Leeds is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and was the first Native American woman to lead a law school.
