The Okmulgee County Criminal Justice Authority (OCCJA) operates two secure detention facilities, the Okmulgee County Jail and the Moore Detention Center, with a combined capacity of over 500 beds. At the core of OCCJA's operations are more than 120 dedicated detention officers who work 24/7, even on holidays, to maintain order, provide care, and ensure the safety and security of all individuals in custody.
Why it matters
OCCJA plays a critical regional role by housing detainees for U.S. Marshals districts across six states, as well as several Native American Tribes. Many individuals housed at OCCJA are awaiting sentencing and have not been convicted, making the role of detention officers especially significant in providing safe, respectful and appropriate care.
The details
OCCJA's detention officers are the constant presence across both facilities, working long 12-hour shifts to monitor housing units, respond to medical needs, manage incidents, and maintain order. The organization is supported by a comprehensive medical program led by Health Services Administrator Kay Johnson and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Sheila Powers, who is the only full-time psychiatric nurse practitioner employed by a jail in Oklahoma.
- OCCJA has been operating its two detention facilities for several years.
- The organization recently received accreditation, making it the only accredited jail in the state of Oklahoma.
