Construction has begun in Oklahoma City's Capitol Hill neighborhood to build four affordable homes as part of a federally backed effort to revitalize the area and provide more housing options for working families. The project is led by the nonprofit Positively Paseo, in collaboration with the city and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Why it matters

Affordable housing is a critical need in many urban areas, and this project aims to address that by creating new homes priced for working-class buyers. The Capitol Hill neighborhood has seen increased investment and development in recent years, making affordable options even more important to prevent displacement of long-time residents.

The details

The four new homes will feature two- and three-bedroom floor plans priced in the low $200,000s, with monthly mortgage payments around $1,300. Additional down payment assistance of up to $23,000 is available through the city's Home Down Payment Assistance Program to help buyers overcome the biggest barrier to homeownership. Positively Paseo has previously built around 80 affordable homes across Oklahoma City, including a 22-home pocket neighborhood near the state Capitol.

  • Construction on the four Capitol Hill homes began in April 2026.
  • The homes are expected to be completed in 6-8 months.

What they’re saying

“We are starting construction on four new affordable homes, and we are in Capitol Hill at a time when there's a lot of excitement about the area itself.”

— Sheryl Lovelady, Executive Director, Positively Paseo

“And we know the biggest barrier to homeownership is the down payment, and so this program assists people with down payment, and it enables them to get into a home of their own.”

— Sheryl Lovelady, Executive Director, Positively Paseo

“Through this program, it is $23,000. Eighteen thousand dollars is for direct down payment, and $5,000 is to buy down the interest rate. We never want to see anyone that is housing burdened.”
