Nwankwo's departure opens a new chapter for the Sooners as they look to rebuild through the transfer portal.Norman TodayOklahoma guard Jeff Nwankwo has announced plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens on Tuesday. Nwankwo, a redshirt senior, spent two seasons with the Sooners but fell out of the rotation late in the 2025-26 campaign. He did not travel with the team to the College Basketball Crown event in Las Vegas last week due to an internal team matter.
Why it matters
Nwankwo's departure is the first offseason roster move for the Sooners, who will now have at least six open scholarships to fill for the 2026-27 season. His transfer opens up an opportunity for Oklahoma to add new talent through the portal as the team looks to build on a late-season surge that saw them win six of their final eight regular-season games.
The details
Nwankwo, a 6-foot-6 guard, began his college career as a wide receiver at Tulane before transferring to Cowley College in Kansas, where he was named an NJCAA All-American. He then joined the Sooners prior to the 2024-25 season but sat out that year due to a torn Achilles. In 2025-26, Nwankwo appeared in 24 games but averaged just 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 29.9% from the field and 23.5% from 3-point range. He fell out of the rotation in February as Oklahoma made a late-season push.
