The Oklahoma Sooners officially retired the jersey of former Naismith Player of the Year Buddy Hield during halftime of their game against Texas A&M on Saturday. However, the Sooners were unable to secure a win on the special night, falling to the Aggies 75-71 despite a strong effort from sophomore guard Dayton Forsythe.
Why it matters
Retiring Buddy Hield's jersey is a significant moment for the Oklahoma basketball program, honoring one of their all-time greats. However, the Sooners' inability to execute late and secure the win on this special night is a disappointment, as they continue to struggle in conference play this season.
The details
The Aggies jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and the Sooners trailed for all but 9 seconds in the game. Oklahoma shot just 33% from the field, but kept the game close throughout. Down 3 points with 25 seconds left, the Sooners had a chance to tie but Dayton Forsythe missed a 3-pointer. The Aggies then hit a free throw to seal the 75-71 win.
