Aaliyah Chavez, the former top-ranked recruit out of Lubbock Monterey High School, has quickly become a standout player for the No. 10-ranked Oklahoma Sooners women's basketball team. As a freshman, Chavez leads the Sooners in scoring at 19.1 points per game and was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season after helping Oklahoma upset No. 2 South Carolina and win on the road against Auburn.

Why it matters

Chavez's immediate success at the Division I level is noteworthy, as she is one of only five players nationally - and the only freshman - averaging at least 19 points, 4.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. Her performance has helped Oklahoma remain a Top 10 team in the country and positioned them for a potential deep NCAA Tournament run.

The details

The 5-foot-10 guard Chavez has stepped right into the starting lineup for Oklahoma and is making a major impact. Last week, she averaged 22 points, six assists and three rebounds in the Sooners' wins over No. 2 South Carolina and Auburn. Chavez is on pace to join an elite group of freshmen since 2009 to average those statistical marks, putting her in the company of players like Hannah Hidalgo, Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark.
