Macey Millar, a sophomore at the Oklahoma School for the Blind (OSB), earned a silver medal in the Sophomore Transition category at the regional Braille Challenge competition held at OSB in Muskogee on March 4. The annual academic competition is part of the National and Youth Programs of the Braille Institute, challenging students to hone their braille reading and writing skills.

Why it matters

The Braille Challenge is the only national Braille literacy competition of its kind in the country, designed to reward students for their study of braille, which is essential to their future academic and employment success. Competitions like this help motivate students to improve their braille comprehension, spelling, and proofreading skills.

The details

Forty-six Oklahoma students competed at OSB for medals and prizes in the Braille Challenge. Contestants in the apprentice, freshman and Transition categories were tested on spelling, reading comprehension and proofreading, while sophomore, junior varsity and varsity contestants were scored on charts and graphs, reading comprehension and proofreading, as well as a speed and accuracy contest transcribing passages into braille.

  • The Braille Institute will invite the top 50 finalists from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia to compete in the National Braille Challenge in Los Angeles in June 2026.
