The 11th-ranked Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team captured Lone Star Conference road wins over Cameron and Oklahoma Christian last week to maintain a share of first place in the league with Dallas Baptist. The Greyhounds (19-3, 12-2) and Patriots (18-6, 12-2) are one game ahead of Lubbock Christian (20-4, 11-3) with four games remaining in the regular campaign, while surprising Western New Mexico (17-5, 11-4) is 1 ½ games back.
Why it matters
ENMU's strong performance on the road keeps them in contention for the top seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference tournament, which would give them a significant advantage. The Greyhounds are looking to make a deep run in the postseason and potentially earn an NCAA Division II tournament berth.
The details
On Tuesday, the Hounds visited rival West Texas A&M (16-8, 8-6). They return to Steve Loy Arena on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt against league newcomer Texas-Dallas (6-15, 5-8). In the wins over Cameron and Oklahoma Christian, ENMU was led by strong performances from several players, including junior guard Austin Abrams, sophomore guard Mo Austin, senior forward Jose Murillo, junior guard/forward Zaylan Chaney, and senior forward/guard Treyvon Byrd.
