The Wilmington tennis team opened its season Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to Batavia in SBBAAC American Division competition. Batavia is now 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the American Division. Wilmington's lone win came at first doubles where Brennen Zeigler and Toby Alsip were 6-1, 6-2 winners.
Why it matters
This early-season match sets the tone for the rest of the SBBAAC American Division tennis season. Wilmington will need to build on the strong performance from its first doubles team if it hopes to be competitive in the league this year.
The details
In singles play, Wilmington's Stephen Adams, Hunter Holbert, and Giovanni Gonzalez all fell in straight sets to their Batavia opponents. At doubles, Brennen Zeigler and Toby Alsip won handily at first doubles, but Wilmington's second doubles team of Giacomo Tritto and Matti Skamris lost in three sets.
