A 9-year-old girl named Savannah Grimmett, who has spinal muscular atrophy Type 2 and uses a wheelchair, is receiving community support to get a wheelchair ramp installed at her family's two-story home in Champion, Ohio. Savannah's mother, Bonnie Grimmett, says the ramp will allow Savannah to have more independence and safely enter and exit the home on her own. A local nonprofit called "Egg My Yard" is organizing an Easter egg fundraiser to cover the estimated $5,000 to $10,000 cost of the ramp construction.
Why it matters
Savannah's current living situation poses safety risks, as her mother has to carry her up and down the stairs to the second-floor of their home where Savannah's bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom are located. The wheelchair ramp will give Savannah the independence to move freely in and out of her home, allowing her to play outside while her mother works from home and reducing the risk of potential emergencies.
The details
Savannah's home has no straight entrance due to stairs leading to the second floor where her living space is located. The planned ramp will be 70 feet long and allow Savannah to access the back patio and enter/exit through a sliding door to the kitchen. Savannah has spinal muscular atrophy Type 2, a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness, and she uses a power wheelchair to get around. Her mother Bonnie says the ramp will help maintain Savannah's remaining muscle function and prevent further deterioration.
- The Easter egg fundraiser deadline is March 28, 2026.
- The ramp construction is planned to be completed before Easter 2026.
