Lake County seniors who once relied on free Dial-a-Ride services now have a second no-cost public transit option: free rides on Laketran's regular bus routes. The Seniors on the Go program expansion builds on the success of the Dial-a-Ride service launched in May 2025, which has provided over 25,000 trips to help seniors reach destinations like grocery stores, libraries, and pharmacies.

Why it matters

The program expansion aims to further reduce isolation among older adults in Lake County by providing more flexibility and accessibility through free access to Laketran's local bus routes, in addition to the existing Dial-a-Ride service.

The details

What they’re saying

“While seniors appreciate the program's free rides on Dial-a-Ride, there is a lot more flexibility when you use the local routes because you don't need to make an advance reservation. Plus, not all seniors need the assistance provided by Dial-a-Ride. I'm very capable of walking to a bus stop to get where I need to go.”

“Transportation plays a critical role in reducing isolation and supporting healthy aging.”

What’s next

Laketran officials said the change came after hearing directly from riders, and they encourage seniors to complete the reduced fare application and provide proof of eligibility to participate in the expanded Seniors on the Go program.

The takeaway

The expansion of the Seniors on the Go program in Lake County demonstrates a commitment to improving transportation access and reducing isolation for older adults, by providing more flexible and convenient options beyond just the Dial-a-Ride service.
