State troopers from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan will be out in force on Interstate 75 this weekend as part of a multi-state traffic safety initiative. The six-state trooper project aims to crack down on speeding, drunk driving, and seatbelt violations, which have contributed to hundreds of crashes and fatalities on the busy highway over the past year.
Why it matters
I-75 is one of the region's busiest interstates, and data shows that speeding, impaired driving, and lack of seatbelt use have led to a high number of crashes and fatalities. This coordinated enforcement effort is intended to improve safety and reduce serious incidents on the roadway.
The details
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that from February 1, 2025 to February 8, 2026, there were 215 OVI (operating a vehicle impaired) crashes on I-75, 11 of which were fatal. Additionally, there were 1,708 speed-related crashes and 1,498 crashes where someone was not wearing a seatbelt. Troopers say that excessive speed reduces drivers' ability to react and increases the severity of crashes.
- The six-state trooper project enforcement effort will run from Friday, February 13 through Sunday, February 15, 2026.
- Pennsylvania State Police and West Virginia State Police will not participate since Interstate 75 is outside of their jurisdictions.

The targeted crackdown aims to improve driver behavior and reduce serious incidents on the roadway.
