The Dayton Police Department is nearing completion of a temporary police substation located next to the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority's Wright Stop Transit Center on Main Street in downtown Dayton. The substation will house 31 officers and 8 supervisors and serve as the central patrol operations division, providing a more visible police presence and quicker response times in the downtown area.
Why it matters
The new substation is an important step in the Dayton Police Department's efforts to strengthen community relations and improve public safety in the downtown area. By having a dedicated police presence in the heart of the city, the department aims to work more closely with residents and businesses to address crime and quality of life issues.
The details
The temporary substation is being set up in a renovated commercial building and will include two floors of space. Downstairs will have an area for officer roll call and community meetings. The substation's central location will allow officers to quickly respond to incidents and be more accessible to the public. The city has also purchased property to build a new permanent police station downtown, but the temporary substation will provide an immediate police presence while that larger project is completed over the next 3-4 years.
- The substation is expected to be completed and open in late February 2026.
- Officers will begin moving into the new substation in late February 2026.
- The official opening of the new substation is planned for sometime in March 2026.
