Miami University's basketball team has maintained its perfect 24-0 record, becoming the last unbeaten team in Division I after Arizona's loss. Head coach Travis Steele credits the team's close-knit chemistry and focus on playing for each other rather than individual accolades as the keys to handling the pressure of their historic start.
Why it matters
Miami's undefeated run has captured national attention, with the team setting several Mid-American Conference records and ranking among the nation's best in key statistical categories. As the last remaining unbeaten squad, the RedHawks are drawing large crowds to their home games and generating excitement around the program.
The details
Miami University has surpassed the best start in MAC history, previously held by Western Michigan at 19-0 in 1975-76. The RedHawks also hold the longest winning streak in conference history, breaking the 21-game mark set by the 2001-02 Kent State squad. Offensively, Miami leads the nation in scoring, field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, and scoring margin. Defensively, the team has tightened up in recent games, holding opponents to under 42% shooting from the field and 28.4% from 3-point range.
- Miami (24-0) became the last unbeaten team after top-ranked Arizona lost 82-78 at Kansas on Monday night.
- Miami's last home game on Jan. 31 against Northern Illinois drew 10,640 to the 57-year-old arena, surpassing the previous mark of 10,634 set in 1976 against Cincinnati.
- The last two home games have each drawn more than 9,000 fans.
The players
Travis Steele
The head coach of the Miami University basketball team.
Brant Byers
The sophomore guard who leads the RedHawks in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game.
Peter Suder
The senior guard and first-team preseason All-MAC selection, averaging 13.9 points per game.
What they’re saying
“It's funny you mentioned the pressure piece because I had a family friend of ours, he has season tickets at Marshall, and he told my father-in-law, 'I can't believe how loose Miami is. It looks like they're having a lot of fun.' And that's our group. I mean, we have a true love for each other, and I think when you're trying not to do it for yourself, but rather do it for others, you don't feel as much pressure.”
— Travis Steele, Head Coach
What’s next
Miami will face Ohio on Friday night in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN. The team could continue to set attendance records at their home arena, Millett Hall, as their undefeated run and national ranking draw increasing interest from fans.
The takeaway
Miami University's basketball team has proven that a close-knit, selfless team culture can thrive under the pressure of being the last unbeaten squad in Division I. Their historic start and dominant statistical performance have generated excitement around the program and demonstrated that mission-driven, team-first basketball can still succeed at the highest levels of college sports.
