Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site and the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall are hosting a talk by prominent local historian and author Stephen Paul DeVillo on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. DeVillo's talk, 'The Neutral Ground: Westchester County in the American Revolution,' will explore Westchester's divided history during the Revolutionary War, when the county became known as the 'Neutral Ground' after the 1776 Battle of White Plains.

Why it matters

  • The talk will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 7:00 PM.

What they’re saying

“After the 1776 Battle of White Plains, Westchester County became known as the 'Neutral Ground.' But there would be no peace here. Occupied by neither side, it was a place where no one could remain neutral amid clashes by detachments of the contending armies, as well as violence by groups of bandits, vigilantes and partisans.”

— Stephen Paul DeVillo, Historian and Author
