As part of the National Defense Authorization Act signed into law in December, automatic military draft registration will take effect in December 2026, applying to male US citizens and other male individuals between the ages of 18 and 26, including green card holders, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented men. The mandatory registration excludes those on nonimmigrant visas. While Congress would have to approve a draft before it takes place, the automatic registration aims to ensure young men are not unknowingly penalized for failing to register.

Why it matters

The nationwide automatic registration measure was passed with bipartisan support, but has gained renewed attention amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, as the Trump administration has not ruled out deploying US troops on the ground. The last time a military draft was in effect was during the Vietnam War in 1973.

The details

Under the new law, eligible men will be automatically registered for the Selective Service system when they turn 18, rather than having to register themselves within 30 days of their 18th birthday as required previously. This applies to US citizens as well as green card holders, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented men between 18-26 years old. Those on nonimmigrant visas are exempt. Failure to register is a felony that can result in the loss of federal benefits and potential imprisonment. Currently, over 60% of Selective Service registrations come through state motor vehicle departments in states that have already implemented automatic registration.

What they’re saying

“Making registration automatic, not only saves taxpayer dollars by eliminating the need to advertise but finally ensures that young men are not unknowingly penalized.”

— Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Democratic Congresswoman

What’s next

Congress would have to approve of a draft before one ever took place. Those selected through a random lottery would then go through physical, mental, and moral evaluation before being called to serve.

The takeaway

The automatic military draft registration aims to ensure all eligible young men are registered, even if they are unaware of the requirement, but its implementation has gained new attention amid the ongoing conflict with Iran and uncertainty around potential future troop deployments.
