As part of the National Defense Authorization Act signed into law in December, automatic military draft registration will take effect in December 2026, applying to male US citizens and other male individuals between the ages of 18 and 26, including green card holders, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented men. Failure to register is a felony that can result in the loss of federal benefits and potential imprisonment. Currently, over 60% of Selective Service registrations come through state motor vehicle departments in states that have already implemented automatic registration.
