Inspired by his brother Kevin, who has a developmental disability, Jim McCann founded Smile Farms with a mission to create meaningful job opportunities in agriculture and hospitality for adults with developmental disabilities. What started as an idea has grown into a nonprofit operating across 14 campuses in the New York metro area, where Smile Farmers grow vegetables, bottle specialty products, and partner with local restaurants.

Why it matters

Millions of Americans with disabilities have the talent and drive to succeed, but often face barriers rooted in outdated beliefs and stigmas. Smile Farms aims to provide a place where people with disabilities can contribute, gain a sense of belonging, and experience dignity and purpose.

The details

Smile Farms was inspired by McCann's brother Kevin, who has a developmental disability. McCann noticed that many outside his family saw only Kevin's disability, failing to recognize his kindness, humor, and desire to make friends. This led to challenges for Kevin in finding a job, forging friendships, and fully experiencing opportunities that others take for granted. Smile Farms was founded to create meaningful job opportunities in agriculture and hospitality for adults with developmental disabilities, providing them not just a paycheck, but a sense of purpose, belonging, and dignity.
