In a new interview, former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe provided an update on his long-in-the-works debut solo album, revealing that the project has "taken longer than I wanted" but that he's hoping to have it out before the end of the year. Stipe says the album has been a "struggle" as he wants it to be as good as his work with R.E.M., which he admits is "near impossible."
Why it matters
Stipe's solo debut has been highly anticipated by fans since R.E.M. broke up in 2011. As the iconic voice of one of the most influential alternative rock bands of all time, Stipe's first foray into solo work is seen as a significant moment in his post-R.E.M. career.
The details
Stipe says the album's delay was partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he's now in the final stages, needing to complete lyrics for 8 remaining songs. While he hasn't settled on a title yet, he's considering "Meet THE Michael Stipe." Stipe admits he's struggled with the pressure of living up to R.E.M.'s legacy, saying "I want this to be as good as that, and that's near impossible."
