K-Tech Solutions Company Limited, a Hong Kong-based technology firm, has announced a joint venture with Aurora AZ Energy Ltd., a Calgary-based energy infrastructure company, to develop up to 500 megawatts (MW) of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure in Alberta, Canada. The initial phase will see the construction of a 100 MW facility, with potential for further expansion using Aurora's portfolio of wellhead natural gas power solutions.

Why it matters

The partnership aims to create a cost-efficient platform for data center operations in North America by leveraging wellhead-sourced power, which is expected to deliver energy costs below prevailing grid rates. Additionally, the joint venture plans to convert natural gas that might otherwise be flared into power for the computing facilities, reducing waste and environmental impact.

The details

Under the terms of the joint venture, Aurora will supply power-rich data center sites sourced from its wellhead energy portfolio, while K-Tech will lead the design, development, and operations of the computing facilities. Together, the parties will deploy purpose-built, high-density data centers optimized for crypto mining, AI training/inference, and other compute-intensive workloads. The initial 100 MW facility is expected to commence operations in Q2 2027, with potential for further expansion up to 500 MW subject to securing additional power, land, and capital.

  • The joint venture plans to launch at Aurora's flagship site in Alberta, with an initial 100 MW of IT capacity expected to come online in Q2 2027.
  • Site preparation and infrastructure buildout for the initial 100 MW facility are expected to commence in September 2026.
