A study analyzing top posts on the Reddit eczema subreddit found that while misinformation continues to appear, community engagement favors discussions that align with American Academy of Dermatology guidance. Posts about empowerment, education, and flare triggers ranked highly for credibility and guideline concordance, while posts about misinformation/doubt and alternative remedies were the least credible.
Why it matters
This study highlights that online platforms like Reddit can serve as valuable resources for eczema patients, providing peer support, education, and access to treatment information. However, it also underscores the challenge clinicians face in addressing misinformation patients may encounter online. Understanding what patients are discussing on these forums can help dermatologists better respond to their concerns.
The details
Researchers analyzed the top 123 posts on the r/eczema subreddit between May 2024 and May 2025. They scored each post on a scale of 0-5 based on misinformation/bias and alignment with AAD guidelines. The most discussed themes were treatment success, flare triggers, and alternative remedies. Posts about misinformation/doubt and alternative remedies ranked the lowest for credibility and guideline concordance, while empowerment/education and flare triggers had the highest scores. Community engagement, as measured by upvote percentage, was associated with higher guideline alignment and lower misinformation.

The professional organization whose guidelines were used to assess the alignment of Reddit posts.
What they’re saying
“Atopic dermatitis is a condition that affects more than 200 million people worldwide and with it comes significant psychosocial burden. Reddit serves as a valuable platform for patients because it provides a place for patients to find peer advice and share experiences online.”
— Ugwumsinachi D. Nwaubani, Medical student (Healio)
“This highlights that clarity and accessibility alone do not guarantee accuracy, which in turn underscores the challenge that clinicians face when patients encounter polished but misleading health information online.”
— Ugwumsinachi D. Nwaubani, Medical student (Healio)
“This study highlights that patients with atopic dermatitis often engage in extensive self-education about their condition, and not all information shared online is inherently inaccurate. Rather than dismissing patient-sourced knowledge, dermatologists should aim to educate themselves on what is being said on online forums and social media networks in order to better understand and respond to patients' voiced beliefs and concerns.”
— Ugwumsinachi D. Nwaubani, Medical student (Healio)
The takeaway
While misinformation about eczema continues to circulate online, this study shows that Reddit communities tend to favor evidence-based discussions and information aligned with dermatologist guidelines. Clinicians should engage with these online platforms to better understand patients' concerns and provide guidance, rather than dismissing patient-sourced knowledge.
