The New York Giants are releasing veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke, a move that will save the team $9 million in cap space as they look to rebuild under new head coach John Harbaugh. Okereke was entering the final year of a four-year, $40 million contract and led the team in tackles in each of his two healthy seasons, but his release creates a $5.4 million dead cap hit for the Giants.
Why it matters
The Giants are facing significant financial constraints this offseason and need to free up cap space to address other areas of the roster. Okereke's release is the first of what is expected to be numerous cap casualties as the team looks to reshape its defense under Harbaugh's leadership.
The details
Okereke, 29, was limited to just 12 games in 2024 due to a herniated disc in his back, but returned in 2025 to make 143 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and two tackles for loss. However, it was not enough for Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen to keep him as the centerpiece of their defense. The Giants' front seven is in good shape with players like Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Abdul Carter, but the inside linebacker corps is now in flux with Micah McFadden also facing free agency.
- The Giants will release Okereke when the new league year begins on March 11, 2026.
- Okereke was entering the final year of a four-year, $40 million contract he signed with the Giants in 2023.
The players
John Harbaugh

What’s next
The Giants are expected to make additional roster moves in the coming days as the legal tampering period begins on Monday, March 11. The team holds the 5th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and could look to address the linebacker position by selecting Ohio State's Sonny Styles.
The takeaway
The release of Bobby Okereke is the first of what is expected to be numerous cap-saving moves by the Giants this offseason as they look to rebuild under new head coach John Harbaugh. The team's defensive front is in good shape, but the inside linebacker corps is now in flux, creating an opportunity for Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen to address the position through the draft or free agency.
