Published on Mar. 2, 2026

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's annual 'I BIRD NY Challenge' begins today, March 1, 2026. The challenge runs through November 1 and asks birders of all ages and experience levels to identify 10 wild bird species anywhere in New York State. Participants who complete the challenge receive a commemorative patch, a completion certificate, and are entered into a prize drawing.

Why it matters

The 'I BIRD NY Challenge' is a low-cost way for New Yorkers to get outside, connect with nature, and learn more about the diverse array of bird species found across the state. The program aims to promote birding and appreciation for wildlife among residents of all ages and backgrounds.

The details

To complete the challenge, participants must identify 10 wild bird species and submit a challenge sheet to the DEC. Challenge sheets can be submitted online, by email, or by mail. The DEC says more than 1,600 birders completed the challenge in 2025. The agency also points participants to the New York State Birding Trail, a network of birding locations across the state, as well as a downloadable beginner's guide to birding.

  • The 2026 'I BIRD NY Challenge' runs from March 1 through November 1.
